Welcome to 2nd Grade
I would like to welcome everyone to our classroom blog. School will be starting soon and I am working to get everything ready. I would like to share a little about myself. This is my 20th year to teach. I have been at White Station Elementary for 17 years. My undergraduate degree was received from the University of Tennessee at Martin. I attended Bethel College and Union University for my master’s degree.
Donors Choose
Our class has a new set of Math Center Activities. We received our Donors Choose materials back in October. The students have enjoyed the hands-on learning while using the new center activities.
A Visit from the Peabody Ducks
Our school was selected to host the Peabody Ducks. One of our students was the honorary Duck Master. The Peabody Duck Master marched the ducks in, shared some interesting facts about the ducks, and read us a story. This was one of the duck’s last stops before they were re-released back into nature.
Character Day 2012
Character Day is a fun and exciting day every year. Students select a character from a book they have read. They come to school dressed as that character. My students wrote a report on their character and shared it with their classmates. We all go outside to the track and have a Character Day Parade.
Watch D.O.G.S.
Our school has wonderful Watch Dog program. Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) gives our students an opportunity to have more positive men as role models active in our school. Fathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles, and father figures come and volunteer for a day or half day with the students at our school.
Lunch with the Principal
Our students earn “Caught You Being Good” tickets from the staff members daily. Every Friday four ticket are drawn out of the collection jars. Those students get to have lunch with the principal. Our adopters Chick-fil-A donates lunch each Friday for these students. So far this year we have had four winners.
Principal Edwards
Our class was very honored last week to have a student serve as Principal for the Day. Principal Edwards was awarded this honor after being the top seller for our fall fundraiser. Principal Edwards did the morning announcements, a teacher’s evaluation, graded the Math Hall-of-Fame tests, and passed out the Cool Cafeteria treats. The students who were selected to eat Lunch with the Principal enjoyed an nice Chick-fil-A lunch with Principal Edwards.
Map Project
After a mini-study of map parts each student created a map of their own. All the maps included a title, compass rose, map key, and symbols.
iPad Station
The students have enjoyed the iPad this year during our station time. We have found some fun and educational apps for all subjects.
Hopes and Dreams 2012
The student’s Hopes and Dreams turned our GREAT this year. Each student wrote something they HOPE to accomplish this school year and a DREAM they have for the future. Our Hopes and Dreams were on display for a month in the hall. We now have moved them to the bulletin board inside our classroom.
Olymipics 2012
We have started our year off with a Magic Tree House book. Hour of the Olympics by Mary Pope Osborne. The students and I are reading about the adventures Jack and Annie have when they go back to ancient Greece. Annie is not allowed to compete in the Olympic games and sends Jack to the games without her.
Book Club
This year we did a variety of books studies. Students read different trade books and we completed a variety of activities based on each book.
Thank You
Mother's Day Gifts
This year my students made breakfast in bed bags to give to their mom for Mother’s Day. Students were asked to make a portrait of their mom to place on the bag. These are a few of the cute bags created.
Eye Poems
Ms. Grant with the Eye Poem winners from White Station Elementary. Four of our second and third graders won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place in this local poetry contest. They were each asked to read their poems at the awards ceremony. Grace’s poem below Every Spring will be published in the poetry yearbook. As you can see we have started working on our poems for next year.
The Gift of Art
Madison made me this piece of art with help from her mom and sister. What a great addition to my student art collections.
Cups with Coach
Coach with my class’s wall of cups. During one of our P.E. classes this spring the students work with Coach on a variety of cup stacking activities. To end the class they used every cup in the gym to make a wall of cups taller than Coach.
Think Show
June 3, 2012 in Uncategorized by frazierla | Edit
My students did PowerPoint presentations for the spring Think Show. They started their research with books from the library. Next, they used Tennessee Electronic Library and World Book Encyclopedia to add to their research. Their research was completed with other online resources. All information collected was displayed in a six slide PowerPoint presentation.
Black History Month
During Black History Month the library windows were turned into a Black History Quilt. Our class make several Wordle blocks to add to the quilt.
The Gift of Giving
The student experienced the gift of giving this year during the holiday season. These are the cute gift bags the students filled with a variety of cards, candies, and goodies for their classmates. Everyone went home with a stuffed bag to enjoy during their holiday break.
Dum Dum Tree
For Thanksgiving Colbin and his family made me a Dum Dum Tree. It has been a welcomed addition to our class. We now all want to be a Dum Dum so we can get a treat off the Dum Dum Tree.
Mid-South Technology Conference 2011
When Jackson, Wilson, and I started planning our blogging presentation for the Mid-South Technology Conference we had no idea what the end result would be. The morning of our presentation we were looking over our PowerPoint while they were giving out door prizes. I was SHOCKED when my name was called to come on down and collect my new iPad 2. I would like the thank Cindy for reaching into the bag and pulling my ticket out. My class had enjoyed the iPad 2 and so have I.
Weather Whys
Our class recently visited the Discovery Lab at the Pink Palace Museum. We were treated to an informative, hands-on session about weather with local meteorologist Austen Onek. He shared with us the different tools used for measuring and evaluating weather.
A Day Made Better
On October 2nd, Office Max surprised 1,000 teachers with $1000 of school supplies through their outreach program called “A Day Made Better.” There were only three teachers selected in my area, and I was one of those fortunate teachers. My class and I were in the computer lab working when the trucks pulled up to unload the goodies. When I realized what was going on, I was so excited that one of my co-workers was getting such a wonderful treat. The assistant principal and facilitator loaded the goodies up and away they went with the Office Max staff. When they rolled into the computer lab I was SHOCKED! I was receiving the “Day Made Better Award.” My students and I were so happy. We received a new digital camera, all-in-one printer, school supplies, office supplies, and much, much more. Office Max of Germantown truly made our DAY BETTER!!
Character Day 2011
Character Day is an exciting event at our school each year. Students select their favorite character from a book and become that person for a day. Once the students arrive at school in character, they share information with their class about the character and book. We have a school wide parade with assistance from our high school band. Students often carry props with them for the parade. Each student makes a pendant in the library to wave during the parade. It is a fun school wide event.
